If you’ve ever wondered how some of China’s seriously “Crazy Rich Asians” went all-out on their Chinese wedding celebrations, you’ve come to the right place. Extravagance was at the forefront for these Chinese celebrities who planned lavish private affairs complete with custom designer gowns, towering cakes, fancy cars, and special imported flower arrangements.
Check out these four luxurious Chinese celebrity weddings to inspire your big day.
Angelababy & Huang Xiaoming
Twenty-six-year-old Chinese singer, actress, and model, Angelababy, one of Asia’s biggest stars and the so-called “Kim Kardashian of China” married leading actor Huang Xiaoming in 2015.
No expense was spared for her $31 million USD reception in Shanghai — every detail was meticulous and beyond extravagant, from the venue to the decorations to the dress. With over 2,000 guests, Angelababy and Huang Xiaoming’s wedding took place at the Shanghai Exhibition Center, which was decorated with thousands of roses, a holographic castle, and gold brocade detailing. Her cake, at ten feet tall, was in the shape of a castle and featured a golden carousel.
And her outfits? Well, it was certainly eye-catching.
Huang and Angelababy began the day in traditional Chinese wedding attire for the tea ceremony but later changed into a suit and gown to exchange vows.
Angelababy wore a Dior ivory satin organza dress. It featured intricate lace embroidery, sheer sleeves, and a 10-foot-long train.
Her wedding ring and diamond tiara alone cost $1.5 million USD and was designed by famed jewelry designer Chaumet. Her wedding guests were treated like royalty as well. Each guest went home with a gift bag filled with expensive goodies, including a new mobile phone.
Of course, Angelababy’s expensive Chinese wedding might be hard to beat for the average person, but her flair for the extravagant is an inspiration to Chinese wedding planners everywhere.
Cecilia Liu & Nicky Wu
As far as iconic 2015 weddings go, mainland actress Liu Shishi, aka Cecilia Liu’s marriage to Taiwanese actor Nicky Wu was another chart-topper. The couple dropped $4.3 million USD on a beachside wedding in Bali, Indonesia.
This Chinese celebrity wedding was complete with 400,000 flowers that were shipped to the site directly from Ecuador and The Netherlands. It was a star-studded wedding and over 300 guests were invited to the wedding banquet.
Cecilia wore a custom-designed wedding gown from Carven which cost around $500,000 USD. Her dress was elaborately made from ivory silk, affixed with a corset, and covered in a thin strip of tulle that extends to the ground. The A-line silhouette and crown-like veil were covered in delicate embroidery.
The bride's groom, Nicky Wu, opted for a minimal yet refined gray Dolce & Gabbana suit.
Guo Jingjing & Kenneth Fok
Back in 2012, Chinese Olympic diver and multi-Gold medalist Guo Jinjing and billionaire heir Kenneth Fok had a $2 million USD wedding in Guangzhou, China.
The pair exchanged vows in the Fok family home and welcomed guests at the lavish and exclusive Nansha Grand Hotel, roped off to press and potential party-crashers.
On the day of the celebration, a fleet of sleek black cars, including a vintage Rolls Royce, carried A-list guests from Hong Kong and the mainland. Around 100 guests were in attendance, making the wedding an intimate affair.
Although the exact brand was not made public, Guo wore a stunning (and expensive-looking!) low cut and long-sleeved silk wedding dress with a long flowing veil complete with immaculate embroidery.
Her bridesmaids were all dressed in light peach off-the-shoulder gowns while her husband-to-be wore a sharp black tuxedo. Guests were treated with a banquet fit for royalty, and to end a spectacular evening, the couple enjoyed a marvelous fireworks display near the water with their guests.
Coco Lee & Bruce Rockowitz
What better way to tie the knot with one of the top 50 CEOs in the world than an over-the-top glamorous wedding celebration at Hong Kong’s Ritz Carlton? Well, that’s exactly what influential Chinese singer Coco Lee and her husband Bruce Rockowitz did in 2011, dropping over $20 million USD on the enviable event.
Of that $20 million, around $10 million was spent on five-star hotel accommodations and ticket fares for 300 friends and relatives. $3 million was spent on private jets to fly international superstars, including Oprah Winfrey, Mariah Carey, and Jennifer Lopez.
Coco Lee wore a beautiful custom Vera Wang wedding gown in a mermaid style with pearl and crystal embroidery for the occasion, which cost her a whopping $33,000 USD and the value of both of their wedding rings is an estimated $3 million USD alone. The couple enjoyed an energetic evening of dining and singing, and they celebrated alongside Bruno Mars and Alicia Keys, who were invited to perform at the wedding.
Although for the average couple, a “Crazy Rich Asians” kind of wedding is not exactly within reach, these weddings, with all their extravagances, are meant to provide inspiration for your big day. Perhaps you can’t book Bruno Mars or commission a 10-foot tall carousel cake — or maybe, you don’t even want to — but scaling down these features can help you decide on what you like and don’t like in terms of wedding decor, dresses, venues, and even food. Of course, East Meets Dress can also help you out with those things, too!
